Lincolnshire hospitals in major breast cancer study

HOSPITALS in Lincolnshire are participating in a groundbreaking study into the prevention of breast cancer.

They are now looking for women who can help them find out more about family history and its connection to breast cancer.

The United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust is one of many organisations participating in the International Breast Cancer Intervention Study II.

This study is investigating whether the drug anastrazole can be used to prevent breast cancer in women at high risk of the disease. Anastrazole has been widely and successfully used to treat breast cancer for many years and now researchers want to see if it is effective in preventing breast cancer too.

Women are being called on to take part in the study at hospitals in Lincoln, Boston and Grantham.

Research radiographer Jane Hall said: "This is a particularly exciting study as it is looking at preventing breast cancer in ladies that may be at increased risk due to family history.

"Breast cancer affects one in nine women and although treatments improve as more research is done, everyone would agree that to prevent cancer developing initially would be ideal."

All women joining the study must be past the menopause, aged between 40 and 70 and have a family history of breast cancer.
