Marking mix-up fails to spoil GCSE joy for Sleaford students

Wednesday 3pm -SLEAFORD'S schools are celebrating another year of fantastic GCSE results, despite marking problems affecting some Science grades.

Kesteven and Sleaford High School have once again achieved outstanding grades among its pupils, with 100 per cent of Year 11 pupils achieving five A* to C grades, and 53 per cent of the grades achieved were A or A* grades.

But the girls of KSHS face confusion over their Science marks as exam board OCR have graded some papers wrong due to new A* grade boundaries.

Craig Booker, headteacher of KSHS, said: "In Science, 20 per cent of the girl's science grades should be A* and were not.

"These wrong grades may apply to French and German too but we are not sure at present."

The issue was spotted when teaching staff noticed no pupils had received the A* grade, as OCR had not applied the A* grading boundaries to the exams. If pupils scored higher than 270 in Science, they receive an A*, and some pupils with scores of 300 were found to have A grades.

Carre's Grammar School were celebrating as their pass rate rose to 98 per cent, with 48 per cent receiving A* or A grades.

Nick Law, headteacher said: "A third of our students achieved eight or more A* or A grades. We are delighted that the efforts of our students, staff and the support of parents has been rewarded by such outstanding results."

St George's Academy also showed impressive results, with 87 per cent of students achieving five or more A* to C grades, with nearly half achieving A* to C in English and Maths.

Paul Watson, Principal, said: "These results will provide the launch-pad for the academy's achievements.

"The overall performance is a huge credit to the students, staff and parents."

At the Lafford School in Billinghay Year 11 pupils collected its last exam results as it closes. Despite this, 47 per cent of Lafford pupils achieved five or more A* to C grades and 97 per cent received A* to G grades.
