Motorists stay safe during coldest weekend of winter

DESPITE temperatures in Lincolnshire plunging to the coldest recorded so far in the country this winter, there have been no major incidents on the roads.

The Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership reported a number of minor road traffic collisions as the weather deteriorated over the weekend but no serious accidents or injuries.

The winter maintenance team at Lincolnshire County Council have been monitoring the Met Office and their own weather stations around the county 24 hours a day to be fully prepared for whatever the winter weather threw at them.

Council winter maintenance engineer David Davies said of the team’s efforts: “Our gritters did an amazing job around the clock to help keep people moving and those who did venture out, did so with care.”

With more than 23,000 tonnes of grit still in stock, the council says there is little chance of supplies running short.

Although the winter maintenance team is working round the clock to keep the roads are as thoroughly gritted as possible, Mr Davies warned that although salt can help, it is not ‘a cure’ and becomes significantly less effective once temperatures drop below well below freezing.

Greville Burgess, road safety manager with the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership, warned drivers to be aware that the average stopping distance in icy conditions is 10 times longer than on dry roads.

Mr Burgess added: “We have gone through this difficult spell relatively unscathed without any major incidents and credit must be given to drivers for driving much slower.”

You can also keep up to date by following the new Gritter Twitter by searching for @LincsCC_winter, where many local people have already taken to Twitter to thank the team for their hard work.

One Gritter Twitter follower ‘SpanishTrucker’ said: “Thanks to all the (gritter) team for all their hard work. Managed to get all my work done today with no problems.”

Fellow follower ‘Torgwen’ added: “Thanks for your updates, it’s great to know our roads are getting attention.”
