Councillor Helen Powell told a meeting of the development control committee at South Kesteven District Council this week that building the two semi-detached houses on land behind the Waggon & Horses could close the business down.

Coun Powell said: “This is complex and confusing. I feel this is totally wrong. The character of the village will be changed. That open space there is the only open space in that area of the village.”

The plan calls for the building of the homes on the current car park and a new car park to be built over part of the garden at the back of the pub. The new car park would still have 17 parking spaces, including two for disabled drivers, plus an extra four designated for the two properties.

Planning officers recommended the plans for approval. But Coun Rosemary Kaberry-Brown said: “I find it absolutely incredible that we have a statement which says these two houses will have no effect on the character of the area. It’s a listed building. They will be prominent in the street scene. I think there will be a major effect.”

Coun Powell added: “We are not supporting the rural economy with this. It’s the kiss of death without a doubt if that construction goes ahead. It will close that business.”

Coun Judy Stevens said that villages needed smaller houses. She said it was a ‘shame’ that the plan wasn’t better.

Coun Mike Cook said a revised plan with the houses further back from the road might be better.
