New road safety campaign launched to help youngsters

A NEW road safety initiative is being launched today (Wednesday) to try and reduce the number of young people killed or seriously injured on Lincolnshire's roads.

Last year, 99 young drivers aged between 17 and 24 were killed or seriously injured on the county’s roads and now the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership has launched 2fast2soon.

The programme is being delivered in three phases and it is expected that approximately 2000 students will benefit from the programme each year.

Phase one is a theatre production throughout the county which will feature a local rock group and speakers, including a police traffic officer, paramedic, fire and rescue officer, consultant surgeon or appropriate specialist and a road crash victim and a representative of their immediate family.

They will each talk about their involvement in a serious or fatal road collision and, in the case of the victim, the affect it had on their lives.

Each student will then take part in workshops and practical driver training, including the use of a skid car.

Greville Burgess, principal road safety coordinator, said: “Whilst road safety is the responsibility of everyone who use our roads, there can be no argument that young drivers, particularly those who have recently passed their driving test, are most at risk.

“2fast 2soon is an innovative way of supporting young drivers by providing them with the skills and knowledge to both enjoy their driving and reduce the risk of becoming a casualty statistic.”

Chief Superintendant Dave Wheeler, head of operations at Lincolnshire Police, said: “The 2fast2soon programme is an innovative way to reach those people most at risk, and deliver the stark message in an impactive and memorable way.”
