THREE animal lovers have teamed up to set up a new charity.

Rob Louth, of Reptile Life in Ruskington, has joined up with Tracy Healy of Foxhall Vets and Alistair Ede of Ruskington Kennels and Cattery to launch the charity to help re-home animals of all shapes and sizes.

The charity, Hollies Animal Re-homing Trust (HART) is based in Ruskington, with space to board homeless cats, dogs and other more conventional pets at the kennels and more exotic animals at Rob’s residence at Reptile Life.

The idea came about when Rob, who re-homes exotic animals for the RSPCA, was talking to Alistair and Tracy, who were both struggling to house more homeless animals in their respective establishments.

The three of them put their heads together and decided to set up an official animal re-homing charity in the Ruskington and Sleaford area, with local man Darren Healy as chairman of the committee.

HART’s long serving resident is four-year-old English Mastiff Gus. He came into their care after his previous owner realised he could no longer look after him and a prospective new owner disappeared without trace.

Although Gus is very friendly, he is very strong and weighs in at 65kg.

Rob said: “Things that need to be considered when taking on a dog like Gus is primarily his size. Although he is well behaved, he is very strong, and a new owner must be able to provide enough space and correct nutrition.

“Gus costs the trust hundreds of pounds but, with our ‘no put to sleep’ policy, he will remain with us for as long as it takes to find the right home.”

HART are also looking to home 11-year-old brother and sister cats Digby and Jet, whose owner had to give them up due to ill health.

To ensure animals are sent to a good home, the team will interview and inspect the prospective owner’s house but, other than that, the re-homing process is quite straightforward.

To help boost their funds, they are holding a quiz night on Wednesday, February 15 at the Shoulder of Mutton in Ruskington, with a top prize of £50 cash, for teams of up to six people at £2 per person to enter.

They are also compiling a cook book and asking people to send in their favourite recipes.
