Gavin Russell, 44, of Sleaford, and Steve Hall, 37, of Morton, will attempt to scale the tallest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales from Wednesday – all within 24 hours.

The pair, both logistics planners at Turners (Soham) Ltd, in Bicker, will be supported by colleague Jon Collins, 41, who will take on the role of main driver.

Steve and Gavin have both wanted to take on the challenge for some time and are pleased to be doing so in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. The charity is dear to both as Steve’s father died from a brain tumour in 1986 when Steve was seven, while Gavin’s mother-in-law also died of cancer.

“Both were looked after by Macmillan, so doing this is our way of giving something back,” said Steve. Since signing up for the challenge – which involves climbing Ben Nevis in Scotland (1,345m), England’s Scafell Pike (978m) and Snowdon (1,085) in Wales – the pair have been training hard.

“I’ve lost two stone and Gavin has given up smoking, too,” said Steve. “We’re really looking forward to the views from the highest peaks of Scotland, England and Wales, but not so much the tiredness and aches and pains afterwards.”
