TO boost his chances of Paralympic glory, a seated discus thrower gave a helping hand to local shoppers to boost his profile.

Twenty-year-old Paralympic hopeful Kieran Tscherniawsky, from Heckington, spent a day in Sleaford’s Sainsbury store to offer his services to pack bags for customers and raise money towards his Games dreams.

He chatted to shoppers about his hopes to represent Great Britain in the seated discus at this year’s London 2012 Paralympics.

Overall Kieran raised £440 from his efforts during his morning and afternoon at Sainsbury’s.

He will be using the money to purchase two new discuses.

Kieran’s grandmother Molly Burrows said: “It was a very successful day and people were very generous.

“A lot of shoppers were really interested in talking to Kieran about his training and preparation, especially as very few of them had ever met someone going to the Paralympics.”

Kieran is still training hard in the hope of making the GB Paralympic seated discus team. He is currently ranked second in the world in his field.

He will find out if he has been selected to represent Team GB in July, after a series of qualifying events in April, May, June and July. If he is successful, he will be competing in his event on September 7.

Kieran won a gold medal at the Junior World Championships in Dubai in April 2011 and finished seventh in the Senior World Championships in New Zealand in January, as well as winning a silver medal at the World Cup in Manchester.
