'Parkour' craze hits the streets of Sleaford...!

PARKOUR is the latest extreme sport to hit the UK and gowing numbers of young people in the Sleaford area are taking it up.

Launched as a diversionary activity for Saturday evenings at the NK Sports Centre, North Hykeham, the sessions have proved very popular, with nearly 70 young people going along when the sessions opened at the beginning of the month.

Parkour involves moving from one point to another in the most efficient and direct route possible, through and over obstacles.

The sport has developed a strong following among teenagers in the Sleaford area and Lincolnshire as a whole, with the formation of the Lincs Parkour group which regularly meets for its own training sessions in Sleaford and Lincoln - for details visit their website at www.lincsparkour.net

Parkour originated in France and has grown in popularity following high profile appearances in James Bond, BBC adverts and on Channel Four’s Jump Britain.

After holding a well attended demonstration day, Extreme NK, the district’s extreme sports promoters, will be running events in an indoor gym environment, teaching the skills needed to participate in a safe environment.

The sport has its detractors who say people taking part in Parkour are damaging property when they run over it, but supporters claim this is a misconception and say that participants are actually very careful in order to protect their bodies and the ennvironment.

Parkour takes place at the NK Centre every Saturday evening from 4pm for beginners and 6pm for a more advanced session.

The sessions are open to anyone aged from nine to 19 and cost 2.

For further details contact the centre on 01522 870 254.
