Patron saint celebrations defy the rain
ST George’s Day celebrations in Sleaford on Saturday began in the rain but better weather later on encouraged more people to venture out and enjoy the day
The annual St George’s Day markets were held in Market Place, with several local charities running stalls at the event. There was also a display of classic cars and cycles.
Town crier Geoff Brocklebank summoned people to the event, which was officially opened by Mayor of Sleaford John Charlesworth at 9am.
Later in the morning Canon Michael Wadsworth’s prayers for better weather seemed to have been answered as the rain stopped and the sun came out as he finished blessing the event.
Music was provided by Sleaford’s Ukelele Orchestra and the Standard’s mascot Gruff the Dragon was also in attendance, posing for photos with families.
Mr Charlesworth said: “The St George’s Day event went well after a wet start when we had to present the colouring awards under cover near the Mia Restaurantt. The sun finally came out and so did the visitors.
“Gruff the Dragon was very popular and I managed a jive with him to the music of the Ukulele band. Our thanks also go to Canon Wadsworth for giving the blessing.”
The winners were also announced for Sleaford Town Council’s primary school colouring competition.
The category for eight to nine year olds was won by Aidan Christmas and runner-up was Charley Tweedale, while Josh Hobbs won the six to seven age category, with Freya Simpson in second place.
Otis Cassidy won the four to five category and Ella Cope was the runner-up. Winner of the 10 to 11 age group was Caitlin Parnell, with Ethan Kelly-Hall the runner up.
