Police warn householders to lock doors and windows
HOUSEHOLDERS may be trying to keep cool in the summer heat wave but Lincolnshire Police are warning that burglars will be taking advantage of the heat wave too.
In the hot weather people throw open doors and windows but that can send out an invite to an opportunist burglar. Over 30 per cent of recent burglaries in the area have been as a result of an open door or window.
Chief Inspector Mark Housley said: "Let's make sure that those who would exploit the good weather in the pursuit of other people's belongings are not enjoying an increase in opportunities to steal.
"If you are in the garden, bear in mind that there could be someone tempted into your house through an open door or window. To know that you and your family, were in the garden at the time can have a great impact on your feelings of safety."
Ch Insp Housley added: "Please just take an extra moment to lock the door when you go out, even if you are just in the garden for a short time. It is surprising how many sneak in burglaries we see and with the help of residents we could seriously reduce the number.
"We are playing our part with enforcement action targeting properties across the division but we need everyone to play their part."
