District councillors are a step nearer to imposing an order banning ‘boy racers’ from using a former airfield as a race track and causing a nuisance to residents and other road users.

North Kesteven District Council’s Executive Board on Thursday July 21 backed a proposed Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) on the old Metheringham Airfield which would prevent motor vehicle gatherings; speeding or racing; obstruction of the highway; causing risk or harm to people or property; and causing undue annoyance from amplified music. The PSPO will go to Full Council on September 22 before it can be adopted.

The decision stems from complaints about gatherings of up to 100 cars on the wartime airfield and drivers using it as a race track carrying out stunts. Anyone found breaking the order faces a fine or court.

Inspector Marc Gee said: “This gives us more powers to tackle the issue and means we can take positive action against it to help enhance public safety.”
