Pupils' joy at opening of perfect playground
A VILLAGE primary school has celebrated the opening of a new playground and wildlife area.
Osbournby Primary School finally ended a five-year battle to create the perfect playground for their pupils after a public footpath was moved to stop vandals ruining the children's play area.
After winning a 5,000 prize from Playground Partnerships, pupils from the school designed the playground themselves. Forming teams consisting of surveyors, health and safety officers, designers, budgeters and coordinators, the children experienced a hands-on role in the making of the area.
To accompany the new playground, a wildlife garden has been dedicated to the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, where the children will be able to monitor what wildlife the garden attracts.
Karen Stearn, the school's playground co-ordinator, said: "We are delighted to dedicate the new wildlife garden to the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust in this 60th anniversary year of the trust's foundation.
"We are grateful to all the parents, businesses and children for all their time, donations and help."
Local businesses and organisations played a key role in supporting the project, including Seaford Lions, Jewsons, Homebase, Aswarby Saw Mill and many others.
The children can now enjoy a wildlife garden with a pond, insect house and nesting boxes, a quiet area for reading and drawing, a growing area to grow their own fruit and vegetables, a herb garden, a trim trail and a stage for use as an outdoor classroom for assemblies and plays.
