Recycling company praises fire service after blaze

Just a few months after a fire at their plant in Caythorpe, Mid UK Recycling suffered another setback after a blaze at their Ancaster site.

The fire at the plant on the High Dyke, just outside Barkston Heath, broke out at just after midnight on Tuesday and crews from all over the county attended.

Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue were at the scene for most of Wednesday and Thursday damping down the blaze, and the Health Protection Agency issued advice to residents living nearby to stay indoors and keep windows shut due to the smoke billowing from the building.

No-one was injured in the incident.

To tackle the blaze, fire crews and Lincolnshire County Council closed off the A153 from the Grantham Road roundabout in Sleaford all the way to Honington, as well as closing the High Dyke from the A52 junction at Grantham up to the A17 junction near Cranwell, causing major distruption for motorists.

Mid UK Recycling are currently assessing costs for repairs and getting the building back to function again, but want to reassure customers that business remains open as usual.

The company have confirmed that they believe the cause to be a mechanical fault on a conveyor system.

The entire building suffered extensive fire damage and two shredders and a connecting conveyor system were destroyed, however the structure can be re-cladded.

Neil Pattison, group production manager, said: “Mid-UK Recycling would like to thank the efforts of Lincs Fire and Rescue Services to contain the fire in the one building, their professionalism and commitment was second to none.

“We would like to apologise for the road closure and to any impact that this fire had to the local amenity and environment.”

This comes after another fire caused extensive damage to a building containing recycled materials at the firm’s plant in Caythorpe in October.
