Rotary Swimathon raises more than £8,000

MORE than 200 swimmers from 50 teams took part in the Rotary Club of Sleaford's Charity Swimathon in Sleaford Leisure Centre on February 26-27, and, as a result of their efforts, over £8000 is expected to have been raised for three charities.

The charities are the Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire Air Ambulance, Wheel Appeal and Rotary's own worldwide campaign 'End Polio Now'.

Swimathon organiser Rotarian Janice Bicknell said: "We raised 8000 last year with sponsorship, donations and gift aid and we hope we have done as well this year.

"We have had fantastic support from everybody in the town. The Rotary Club would wish to thank all the sponsors who so generously supported this major fundraising event."

The 24-hour charity event included teams from the Rotary Club itself, the district and town councils, the three secondary schools in the town and several primary schools, the Army Cadet Force, officer cadets from RAF College Cranwell, a supermarket, estate agents, accountancy firms and other Sleaford businesses.

In all the 50 teams covered 12,000 lengths of the Leisure Centre pool, a combined distance close to 200 miles.

A dozen members of the All Saints' Ladies' Group, Ruskington, raised 500 with teams in the Swimathon and a new event, a Whip-and-Topathon, while four sixth form students from Carre's Grammar School swam 500 lengths to raise more than 200.

Rotary Club president Norry Bell, a retired RAF pilot, achieved a personal target in the Keepfitathon – the third arm of what was a triathlon – by covering 22 miles on the rowing machine in the Leisure Centre's keep fit Suite, the distance from Dover to Calais.

Janice added: "The main purpose of the event was to raise money for three very deserving causes. But it was about more than that. It was about taking part and having fun."
