A NEIGHBOURHOOD Policing Team have launched a hard-hitting campaign to deter inconsiderate parking on yellow zig zag lines outside the gates of a primary school.

PCSOs are working closely with staff at St Botolph’s Primary School, Quarrington, near Sleaford, in order to stop parents from parking on the zig zag lines along Rookery Avenue during school drop off and collection times. The problem is one that is encountered outside schools across the county.

Parents are being asked what it will take to stop them from parking in such dangerous locations for young children crossing the road? They are attempting to get the message across that the zig zags are there for a purpose - to provide a clear area in which children can cross. They can see approaching cars and drivers can see them.

PCSO Amy Michie said the issue had become a serious problem at the school, with parents and residents regularly passing on their comments via the school staff. There was a close call with a child just before Christmas.

She challenged motorists to think whether it took a child’s death to convince them and to launch the campaign pupils posed for a photograph highlighting where and why the zig zag lines are outside the school.

PCSO Michie said: “People are blatantly ignoring the zig zags and they are not listening. I told drivers in the past and they have looked at me as if they think they are not doing anything wrong.

“Parked cars are a major cause of accidents outside schools. You may think that an accident will never happen at your school but it will if people continue to park on the zig zag lines.”

She added: “We are also asking parents to consider local residents and respect that they still need to have access to their driveways. It is an offence to block a private driveway with a lowered kerb.

“Please think about where you park.

“Be considerate and respect the safety of children.”

I agree. I was a culprit a long time ago and used to drop off my kid at 8am and park in the lay by at 5.20pm to pick up from kids club. Now I don't at all, but I still get filthy stares from the residents when I'm parking somewhere which doesn't block their drive and has no lines on the road. It really is daft to buy a house near a school if you aren't prepared to have the legal parking areas on the street cluttered with cars twice a day. If cannot gripe with people parking legally!

Absolutely agree! I always struggle to see what's coming to manage to cross with the kids. It's just not safe. I have a reason for needing to drive the kids in at the moment, so to park safely I make sure I go early. It's just pure laziness for the same people everyday arriving too late to park safely then deliberately parking on the zigzags or bus stop- and then of course when the bus comes, all hell breaks loose, having to completely block the road because it can't park.

It's about time something was done with the parking! It really is inconsiderate and pure laziness on parents part! However, I still think regardless of the road safety campaigns it will not deter people!
