In a statement on Saturday via Facebook, Sleaford Carnival committee chairman, Nigel Gresham said: “It is with regret and a heavy heart that the committee have taken the decision to cancel Sleaford Carnival 2016.

“Unfortunately workloads and illnesses and reasons which are beyond our control have left us in the position where an adequately organised, safe, enjoyable carnival would not be possible.”

He went on to say they were already starting to make plans to avoid a repeat of this cancellation in 2017.

“All agencies involved are on board and very supportive of this,” he said.

“We hope you will join us in 2017.”

The carnival was revived by a band of volunteersin 2013 with support from local businesses and organisations.

In the past it has featured a parade through town, arena acts and stalls on the Boston Road Recreation Ground, a fun run and a cycle race.

There have been many messages of sympathy and disappointment at the news on Facebook.
