Status Quo drummer to run workshop at Ruskington school
THE drum is certainly beating for one village primary school, with a visit by a rock star next week.
The history and skills of drumming are a key element of the music curriculum at Chestnut Street Primary School in Ruskington and the pupils' studies are to culminate in drumming workshops being led by Jeff Rich, a professional drummer with the world famous rockers Status Quo.
Jeff is coming to the school on Tuesday, November 3 to run the workshops with pupils in key Stage Two.
That same evening, he is also holding a drumming master class for adults and young people aged 11 and over at the school. The evening includes a hands-on session under Jeff's guidance and an opportunity to hear about life with Status Quo.
A licensed bar will be open for the evening, which begins at 7pm. Tickets are selling fast and are on sale from the school on 01526 832424 priced 7.50.
To enhance the pupil's music studies, the school has teamed up with CfBT, the county's school improvement service, for a series of music-making lessons for Year Four children based on pattern and rhythm. The lessons are being led by Jeana Hopkins from the music service and are focused on the development of drumming skills with the African 'djembe'.
As part of their extended provision, the school has also employed Njega, a professional drummer from West Africa, to lead an after school drumming club for Key Stage Two pupils.
Music co-ordinator Claire Sneyd said: "This has been very enthusiastically received and the children are hoping to perform as a band before Christmas. Our thanks go to Dave Groom at ArtsNK for linking our school up with Njega."
