Swimmers leap into rivers for The Big Jump 2010

OPEN-WATER enthusiasts took a bold leap into the deep over the weekend.

Thousands of hardy swimmers all over Europe simultaneously leapt into rivers and open water as part of The Big Jump 2010.

The event took place on Sunday afternoon and locally a group of 11 swimmers jumped into the River Witham at Southery at precisely 3pm, as did many others in open water across France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Austria, Poland and the Netherlands.

Outdoor swimming enthusiasts Nicola Marshall and Sandra Moran organised the Southery event, which was the only location in Lincolnshire where an event was being held in connection with the Big Jump.

The Lincolnshire event was one of only three held in the UK, with the other two taking place at Penzance and Dorset.

Around 45 people came to watch the jump, some venturing over to watch from the local pub.

A local free diver also came along to take part in the jump with professional diving equipment and recorded the water temperature as a 'pleasant' 22 degrees.

Nicola said: "It was great to see so many people turn up on the day, and we all had a great time. The weather was perfect for us and there was a great family atmosphere there too."

Nicola and Sandra's next outdoor swimming ventures include swimming in Devon and Cornwall this week, six locations across London in one day on August 4 and The Big North Sea Plunge in September.
