UKIP leader Nigel Farage has slammed the Government for not doing enough to highlight the importance of the Police and Crime Commissioner elections tomorrow (Thursday).

Mr Farage was in Lincoln today to support UKIP candidate Victoria Ayling’s bid to land the role of Lincolnshire’s new PCC.

He claimed that the election was a two-horse race been Ms Ayling and Conservative candidate Marc Jones.

However, Mr Farage said that many people he had spoken were not aware of the election - or what the commissioner’s role involved.

He said: “I’ve come to Lincoln to try and highlight the fact an election is actually taking place and, of course, to support a very capable UKIP candidate.

“However, it seems good many people seem oblivious about the whole thing and you have got to ask what the Government has done to raise awareness.”

Mr Farage said Ms Ayling, a county councillor, had all the qualities needed for the role - if she is elected.

He added: “She is an excellent candidate. She is an experienced councillor and would do a first class job.

“All the signs are it (Lincolnshire) is a two horse race and it is difficult to call. I think it will be very close.”

Apart from Ms Ayling, the other candidates are Marc Jones (Conservatives), Lucinda Preston (Labour) and Daniel Simpson (Lincolnshire Independents).

A low turn-out is forecast with the result for the £72,000-a-year post expected on Friday afternoon.
