Victorian painting inspires young writers

YOUNG writers at Our Lady of Good Counsel RC School in Sleaford have been putting pen to paper as part of a two-day workshop.

Children combined creative writing, drama and history to explore William Powell Frith's painting The Railway Station, to improve writing and literacy skills.

Literacy co-ordinator Linda Francis said: "Writing is a national issue in primary schools so we wanted to put across that it can be enjoyable.

"The Railway Station is a Victorian painting with over 100 people in it, so we asked the children to explore the stories of the people and why they were there."

As well as using drama and role play to act out the scene, the children developed language and vocabulary skills.

Year Five pupil Joshua Stuart said on his feedback sheet: "I thought it was wonderful. If we had another workshop I would like it to be a bit longer, maybe three days instead of two."

The school plans to do a non-fiction writing workshop before the end of the school year.

Year Five pupil Fraser Parry said: "I enjoyed everything we did during the writers' day and I found working on sound, movement, colour and emotion descriptions most useful."
