Councillors will tomorrow night (Wednesday) consider whether to spend the recommended £3,075 from general reserves for contractors to carry out safety checks on the Grade 2 listed structure, clean out weeds and plant growth.

Stonework would also be checked to see how it is bearing up from pollution and weathering explains town clerk Kevin Martin in his report.

He added: “In recent weeks a gargoyle was knocked off the monument following a lorry strike and whilst recovered needs repair and re-fixing.”

Although this year’s budget would not cover the expected £3,075 bill for specialist work, no budgeted money had been spent for the past six years and that had been stored in reserves.
