The firm behind plans to open a cinema in Sleaford said it was ‘backing away’ from the town following publicity over a potential move.

The proposals came to light at a meeting of Sleaford Town Council where members discussed a letter from the owners of the Regal Cinema, in Melton Mowbray, about the possibility of their business expanding into the town.

l A lorry was engulfed in flames on the A17 near the turn off for Kirkby la Thorpe after what was said to be a mechanical fault led to a fire.

The driver of the vehicle, which was carrying sand, was unhurt in the blaze.

l Cricket legend Matthew Hoggard offically launched the re-vamped Northgate Sports Hall, in Sleaford.

It followed a six-week, £12,000 refurbishment of the facility.

l Police were appealing for information after two cats were shot in Sleaford.

The animals’ injuries were such that one had to be put to sleep, while the other needed to have a leg amputated.

The incidents were not 
being treated by police as linked.
