Firefighters have been called out to a fire at Castlefields this afternoon (Thursday).

The alarm was raised at about 2.24pm and a Sleaford firecrew attended the area off Castle Causeway where mown grass and other rubbish was on fire.

Sleaford Town Council manages the site and clerk to the council Sheila Scholes said they were concerned that the fire may have been started deliberately by youths.

She said: “Although the cause has not yet been established, it would seem that these fires are being set by children who have no clue what they are getting themselves into.

“Our staff have been doing work on the Castlefields area leaving piles of cuttings and when they came back to clear them up it was on fire and the grass is so dry at the moment.”

She feared the fire could have spread dangerously without prompt action.

She said: “I am really concerned. As soon as teh fire service arrived there were kids everywhere.”

She said: “We have reported it to the police and will have a clear understanding of what happened later.”
