A17 closed in both directions after agricultural vehicle catches fire

A vehicle fire has closed the A17 in both directions this afternoon as thick smoke is billowing across the carriageway.

Four fire crews are still on the scene and have been tackling the blaze on the A17 near East Heckington involving three articulated lorry trailers stored on land at the side of the road.

Fire crews from Billinghay, Sleaford, Donington and Boston attended the scene between East Heckington and Swineshead Bridge at about 1.39pm this afternoon (Wednesday).

The road has been closed in both directions by police from the A1121 to the B1395 Sidebar Lane.

Police are directing traffic but there have been long delays in the area.

They said the road has been closed due to heavy smoke in the area and will be opened once the smoke has cleared.

Ros Louth, owner of Abbey Parks Farm Shop in East Heckington said the fire started on land to the right hand side of the road heading towards Boston, neighbouring their farm.

She said: “The road has been closed, but I think it has now re-opened as traffic is passing slowly from Boston towards Sleaford.”

She added: “I don’t know who the land belongs to but they have four containers parked there and one of them caught fire. They called the fire brigade as the fire was blowing directly across the road. There was thick black smoke so it was quite dangerous. It is out now, thank goodness, but our trade has been dead as a dodo, as a result.”
