A Sleaford business owner has been forced to close until repairs can be made after a young driver apparently lost control of his car and smashed into her shop front.

The incident was reported to police at 10.25pm last night (Tuesday) when a 17-year-old man from Sleaford is beleived to have run off the road and collided with the shutters of the NG34 clothes shop on Southgate.

The shutters were damaged beyond repair by the orange Peugeot 106 which became embedded in the middle of them, also shattering a wooden bay window behind and warping the door frame of the shop.

A police spokeswoman said no charges have been brought against the driver yet as it is being treated as a ‘damage only’ collision and placed in the hands of insurers. However, she added: “The driver has been reported for driving without due care and attention and our Collision Unit will make a suitable decision regards the outcome of the 17-year-old driver.”

NG34 owner Wendy Askew was at home watching television when she was called to the scene by police and said it has done a lot of damage.

“He has gone straight through the shutters, but thankfully no-one was hurt,” she said.

“We have had to close the shop today and will probably be closed for several days as the shutter is ruined and had to be cut off. A new one will have to be specially made.”

Mrs Askew has run the business for over five years and said she was shocked by the amount of damage with glass fragments flung halfway towards the back of the shop, which they have had to carefully clean to remove any remaining pieces of glass.

She has had well wishers offering support and been given flowers from a neighbouring business. She did not know what the cost of the repairs would be yet but expected it to be quite high.
