Network Rail has apologised for the inconvenience caused by today’s extended closure of the A17 level crossing at Swineshead.

A spokesman for the rail company said the crossing was due to be closed until 1pm for a maintenance inspection but, during the course of the inspection, it became clear it would take longer than expected.

He said Network Rail sought consent from the county council to extend the closure until 4pm and that was granted.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused by the additional hours of closure which were required to allow this important safety process to take place,” he said.

UPDATE 3.15pm: Network Rail has just said the level crossing on the A17 at Swineshead will remain closed until 4pm today (Friday).

All Network Rail has said so far is there has been “a technical problem with the crossing”.

More as we get it.

EARLIER: Drivers are being advised to avoid the A17 level crossing at Swineshead, which Network Rail says will be closed until 1pm today (Friday).

The reason for the emergency closure is not yet clear.

From the Sleaford area traffic will be diverted via the A15 to the A52, re-joining the A17 at Bicker Bar.

Any traffic joining the A17 beyond Sleaford will be diverted via the A1121 to the A52, and again re-join the A17 at Bicker Bar.
