Police are appealing for witnesses after a driver sustained serious injuries when his tanker flipped at Swinderby and ended up in a ditch.

A collision between a blue BMW and a tanker lorry took place on the southbound carriageway opposite the Swinderby turn off yesterday at around 6.35am. The tanker had to be recovered from a ditch as a result.

The male driver of the tanker received serious injuries and was air lifted to hospital for treatment. No-one else was seriously injured.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or saw either of the vehicles prior to the incident should contact police on the witness collision hotline, 01522 558855, quoting incident 61 of 16/04/2016.

UPDATE SATURDAY 5.20PM: A driver of a tanker which flipped on the A46 near Swinderby has been freed.

The tanker had crashed through the road barriers into a field full of sheep.

Motorists reported traffic building up as a result of the road being closed southbound as firefighters worked to free the driver.

Crews from Hykeham, Lincoln North and South and Notts Collingham were called to the scene at 6,39am. They used hydraulic rescue equipment to gain access to the driver, whose lorry had overturned and ended up in a ditch.

A spokesman for Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue said on Twitter: “Crews released one male casualty using hydraulic rescue equipment and stemmed a diesel leak from the tanker.”

An spokesman for East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) said: “We received a call from the police at 06.41 this morning, reporting a petrol tanker had been involved in a road traffic collision on the A46 near Swinderby.

“Our Emergency Operations Centre responded immediately and sent crews to the scene in fast response cars, an ambulance and requested support from an EMICS doctor and the Air Ambulance.

“A male patient was assessed and treated on scene by our clinicians and taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre by the air ambulance.

“No-one else required assessment or treatment at the scene.

“The air ambulance arrived at the QMC at 08.37am.”

Traffic has been building up since the road was closed southbound as firefighters tried to free the driver.

A spokesman for the fire service said on Twitter: “A46 near Swinderby. Crews from Hykeham, Lincoln North & South + Notts Collingham attending. Crews using hydraulic rescue equipment to gain access to driver of a lorry that has entered a ditch.”
