Doubles success for Kathy and Kevin

THE Barbra Beard mixed doubles championship at Sleaford Tennis Club was played in perfect conditions on Saturday.
Twelve mixed partnerships were drawn at random from the 24 individuals who entered the event. The pairs were then spilt into two groups of six, with one group playing at the Boston Road courts and the second at Carre's Grammar School.
Each pair played five matches of seven games, with the top two pairs from each group winning a place in the semi-finals.
From the Boston Road group, one of the defending champions, Kevin Hawkesworth, partnered this year by Kathy Kinnard, won the group with 26 games. Christine and Andrew Loakes came second with 20 games.
At Carre's, the group winners were Jeanette Turland and Mark Johnson with an impressive 29 games. They achieved the best score in the round robin stages, dropping only six games. Lloyd Bailey and Meg Cowap were runners up in the group with 24 games.
The semi-finals were played at Boston Road. In the first, Kevin and Kathy beat Lloyd and Meg 6-2, while Christine and Andrew got the better of Jeanette and Mark in a very tight second semi-final, 6-5.
Kevin and Kathy were in uncompromising form in the final, beating a game Andrew and Christine 6-0.
The trophy was presented to the winners by club chairman Alison Gibson. The event was organised by Jeanette Turland.
*The Sleaford Tennis Club presentation night will be held at Leasingham Village Hall on Saturday, October 11, followed by a ceilidh.
