TEENAGE karting star Jack Harvey took a hard-fought 13th place in the CIK FIA KF2 European Championship meeting at Braga in Portugal at the weekend.
The 15-year-old from Bassingham went into the meeting as one of the pre-event favourites for the title, after clinching the KF3 crown last season and the FIA Asia-Pacific KF2 title earlier this year.

However, a handful of mechanical problems meant that he was forced to fight his way through from the back of the grid in the two finals on Sunday.

In the heats, Jack was hampered by a lack of power against the best drivers from across the continent and suffered two non-finishes over the early part of the weekend.

It meant he was forced to start from the back of the grid for the first of the two finals, leaving him a mountain to climb if he was to make a repeat of his 2007 success.

Jack made a fantastic start and put in an outstanding drive to move himself up through the order to finish 15th at the chequered flag, more than halfway through a grid of the top drivers in Europe.

An eighth row starting position meant he would have to repeat his drive in the winner-take-all grand final.

But, once the race got under way, Jack was aware he did not have the performance available to him that his rivals ahead did and, despite one of his hardest drives of the year so far, he had to settle for 13th place.

He said: “It was definitely a hard and frustrating meeting. We struggled all weekend, but the team worked so hard for me and I tried as hard as I could every time I went out on to the track. Unfortunately this time it wasn’t meant to be.”

Jack will be back in action in the MSA Super One British Championship at Larkhall in Scotland this weekend.
