ROUND one of the new Notts and Derby Cyclo Cross season began at Sinfin Park, near Derby.
Jake Poole of Sleaford was competing in his first race since damaging his knee last October in a round of the national trophy at Ipswich.

Riding for VC Lincoln, the St George's College pupil started from the second row of the under 12s race.

On a waterlogged course, Jake gave chase to leader Arthur Green, of Matlock CC, but was held up by slower riders and unable to mount a serious challenge.

Steve Poole, Jake's dad, riding for www.zepnat.com RT, made a good start in the main race only to be brought down by another rider which dropped him back into the mid 30s. But by the end of one hour race, he had pulled back to 26th.

l In round one of the Lincolnshire Cyclo Cross League, at Chandlers near Grantham, Jake claimed a good win in the under 12s section, despite slipping off on a tight corner which dropped him down to fifth.

The next round is at RAF Cranwell this Sunday.

l Competing in round one of the National Trophy series in Wales, Steve Poole came 23rd. The next round is in Exeter.
