A SCHOOL teacher is preparing to take on the country’s most famous endurance run.
Andrew Wilkinson, assistant headteacher and head of sport science at Carre’s Grammar School in Sleaford is preparing to take part in his first London Marathon in April to raise money for Help the Hospices, the UK charity for hospice care.
Andrew has decided to run the London Marathon following the death of his grandmother who spent her final days in the care of a hospice. He said he wanted to reward the fantastic work the facility did in caring for her.
He is also running the marathon in memory of former teacher and colleague John Cattermole, who passed away last year, and hopes to raise around £2,000 from his efforts.
Andrew said: “I have never done anything like this before so the training has been a real challenge but hospice care is so close to my heart and I feel proud to be making a difference to people facing the end of life, as well as to their families. It will be a great feeling to be cheered on by my friends and family.”
Andrew has been training hard for the event and is currently running up to 20 miles on his practice runs and, having already completed two half-marathons in the past, is well on his way to being ready for the challenge ahead.
Help the Hospices supports and works with more than 200 hospices to ensure that everyone at the end of their lives has access to the best possible care.
Katy Sprake, fund-raising events manager at Help the Hospices, said: “With the support of our runners, we can continue to champion and support hospice care so that more seriously ill people and their families can make each day together count.”
