Biggest ever field for Sleaford Half Marathon

THERE was a record field for the 2010 Sleaford Half Marathon on Sunday.

A total of 638 runners from all over the UK lined up and the start and 611 completed the 13.1 mile event.

This year's winner was John Herbert of Werrington Joggers, Peterborough, in a time of one hour 12 minutes 10 seconds.

He finished more than three minutes ahead of Didier Idziak of Sleaford's twin town of Marquette lez Lille in France, with Phil Chirtchlow of Beaumont RC third, seven seconds further back.

The first Sleaford runner to complete the event was Alan Oliver of Sleaford Striders, who came 15th in 1.24.01.

Faye Banks of Ackworth was the first female runner to cross the line. Her time was 1.27.23.

Andrew Taylor of Sleaford Town Runners clocked 1.3044 to finish 48th.

Among the hundreds of runners taking part were members of the RAF's famous aerobatics team the Red Arrows.

Four of the pilots, plus three of the pilots' partners and two of the engineers were in the field, using the Sleaford Half Marathon as training for the Virgin London Marathon, which takes place on Sunday, April 25.

They were raising money to support the Royal Air Force Association 'Miles More Minutes' Wings Appeal project to enable RAF personnel serving overseas to telephone home to their families more frequently by increasing the amount of 'talktime' telephone credit available.
