Cup exit as Ruskington find handicap too stiff

PLAYING at Heighington in the City (evening) League, Ruskington picked up 10 points after sharing rink wins but taking the match on aggregate. Martin Jennings, Keith Pilbeam and Tony Codd won 24-19; Jim Matson, Andy Snoxell and George Glover lost 20-23; Jim Barclay, Les Wilkinson and Graham Croft lost 18-20; David Miller, Trevor Thackray and Jock Mitchell won 27-19.

But there were only three points for Ruskington away to Carholme in the Lincoln & District League. Wendy Pateman, Kath Booth and Graham Croft won their game 28-20 and Jim Matson, Jock Mitchell and Cyril Knaggs tied19-19.

On their journeys again, Ruskington visited Leasingham in the Woodhall Spa League but lost two of the three rinks and on aggregate to pick up only two points. The winning rink was Sue Mitchell, Paul Butterworth and George Glover, who won 23-14.

Branston were the visitors to Ruskington’s green for a Cliff League encounter and they went away with the lion’s share of the points. Wendy Pateman, Les Wilkinson and Tony Codd lost 12-18; George Freeland, Paul Butterworth and Ann Jennings lost 17-18; John Booth, Trevor Thackray and George Glover tied 17-17; Jim Matson, Martin Jennings and David Miller won 21-16.

There was no joy for Ruskington when Branston A visited for a City (afternoon) League game. The visitors fielded several county-level players and Ruskington were beaten on all rinks, picking up no points.

But Ruskington did pick up 12 points from a home match against Metheringham in the City (evening) League. Jim Barclay, Andy Snoxell and Paul Butterworth won 21-18.; Tony Codd, Elayne Shannon and George Glover won 26-23; Dave Woods,Steve Shannon and Ann Jennings lost 19-21; Martin Jennings, Isabel Drain and Chris Armitage won 40-12.

That was followed by a home defeat to Welton in a Lincoln and District League fixture. George Freeland, Cyril Knaggs and George Glover were the only Ruskington winners with a 32-19 victory.

A trip to Dunston in the Cliff League was a case of ‘so near, yet so far’, with Ruskington only gaining two points after some closely fought rinks. David Miller, Jim Graham and Jock Mitchell won 25-15; George Glover, George Freeland and Trevor Harding lost 15-25; Jim Matson, Les Wilkinson and Ann Jennings lost 17-18; Graham Croft, Andy Snoxell and Paul Butterworth lost 18-20.

A Woodhall Spa game at Billingborough also produced just one rink win for Ruskington. Dave Woods, Isabel Drain and Paul Butterworth lost 12-24; Cyril Knaggs, Ceceil Hall and Jim Graham lost 12-26; Carol Croft, Sue Mitchell and Les Jenkins won 20-19.

Giving Hykeham B 22 points in the City (afternoon) KO Cup proved too much of a handicap for Ruskington, who were well beaten. Les Jenkins, Ann Jennings and Tony Codd lost 10-22; Jim Barclay, Martin Jennings and Trevor Harding lost 10-13; Paddy Armstrong, Les Wilkinson and Graham Croft won 17-9.

In the final game of the week, Ruskington edged out Saxilby on aggregate, 89-88, to win their rearranged Lincoln and District League game. David Miller, Paul Butterworth and Graham Croft lost 18-24; Dave Woods, Keith Pilbeam and Ann Jennings lost 14-27, Jim Matson, Cyril Knaggs and Martin Jennings lost 23-24; George Glover, Andy Snoxell and Tony Codd won 34-13. Ruskington picked up eight league points.
