THERE were five matches to report on this week. There should have been six but our opponents in the City KO Cup competition withdrew, letting the Ruskington bowlers through to the second round.
First was a rescheduled Lincoln and District match at home against Cherry Willingham and it was a bit of a disaster, but it was close until the last few ends. Three lost rinks and a draw gave them just one league point.
The drawing set was Kath Booth, Tony Codd and Martin Jennings, who scored a single on the final end, finishing at 20-20.
David Miller’s set of Paul Butterworth and Elayne Shannon were right in the game until dropping a total of 10 shots on three of the last four ends to finish 18-26 down.
George Glover with Steve Shannon and Andy Snoxell lost by the narrowest of margins at 27-28 and Graham Croft’s crew of Karina Woods and Ann Jennings lost 20- 24 despite winning six of the last seven ends.
The second encounter was away at Welton in the Lincoln and District League, where the bowlers won on two rinks and took the aggregate 116-80 so garnered 10 league point.
On Wednesday they played away at Eslaforde in the Woodhall Spa League. Jim Barclay’s set of Kath Booth and Cecil Hall managed a draw at 14-all, but Carol Croft with Isabel Drain and Cyril Knaggs went down 13-21 having led until the 13th end, and Dave Woods’ set of Jim Graham and Sue Mitchell lost 8-22.
Next was a home fixture versus Dunston in the Cliff League.
Torrential rain brought this match to an early conclusion, but it was a good result for Ruskington with three of the four rinks won, plus the aggregate, so 12 league points were gained.
Ann Jennings, George Glover and Graham Croft won 19-11, Dave Woods’ set of Jim Matson and Paul Butterworth won 24-18, Wendy Pateman with Les Wilkinson and Tony Codd won 17-9, and Martin Jennings’s set of Andy Snoxell and Margaret Phillips lost 9-20.
Last of the week was a first round match in the City KO Cup competition, played at home against Thorpe-on-the Hill who had to given Ruskington one shot handicap.
David Miller’s set of Cecil Hall and Tony Codd lost a close game 16-20. Wendy Pateman’s set of Andy Snoxell and Paul Butterworth lost by a single shot at 22-23.
Dave Woods with Les Wilkinson and Jim Barclay were in the position of needing to score a win by five shots, which they duly did at 27-22 thus giving the bowlers that precious draw on shots, hence the match, so they progress to the next round.
