CRICKET: Sleaford CC retain top spot despite second successive abandoned match

Unsurprisingly, Sleaford were asked to bat when their visitors won the toss, and after the early loss of Andy Hibberd, a watchful partnership between Thomas Shorthouse and Obus Pienaar saw their side’s total move into three figures before Shorthouse was dismissed for an extremely patient and valuable innings of 37.

Jack Wilson joined Pienaar who was by now moving inevitably to another major contribution and the pair were to add 152 for the third wicket, with Wilson making his maiden Premier League half century whilst Pienaar registered his sixth century of the season.

Wilson was eventually run out for 55 and Pienaar caught for 156 as Sleaford totalled 269 from their allotted 50 overs.

Sponsored by Baker Plant Hire, Sleaford took wickets at regular intervals as their opponents looked to save the game. It was, however, the weather that was eventually to have the final say with eight overs remaining when heavy rain forced the abandonment of the game, leaving Sleaford frustrated for the second week running.

On Sunday, Sleaford Academy, sponsored by Turnbulls, recorded a comfortable win at Boston.

Batting first, Sleaford totalled 209 from their 40 overs, with Matt Bean making 66 and Andy Hibberd 45 before the home side were dismissed for 157, with Mason Mansfield claiming four wickets.

This weekend, Sleaford travel to Louth in the ECB Premier League on Saturday whilst, at Sleaford, in the South Lincs and Border Premier League, sponsored by Darren Wilson, Sleaford entertain Long Sutton.

On Sunday, the first XI, sponsored by Specsavers, entertain Woodhall Spa whilst The Academy travel to Old Lincolnians.

Spectators are welcome at both home fixtures with no admission charge payable.
