Gollop bowls champs to win

IN only their second game of a rain-hit season, South Lincolnshire and Border League Division One title holders Bilingborough 1st XI took on Moulton Harrox in only their second game of the season on Saturday.

The defending champions find themselves having to play catch up, with title rivals Spalding and Stamford having played more games, so they couldn’t afford any slip ups.

Winning the toss, Billingborough skipper Paul Goodwin boro’s elected to bat on a new wicket.

Opening pair Geordie Scott and Dave Newman started brightly, punishing anything short.

Scott raced to 25, with 20 of those in boundaries, before mistiming a drive and being caught off the bowling off Matt Barnett.

Billingborough then lost wickets quickly to slump to 76-5.

But, with Newman still at the crease and looking solid, Harrison joined him in the middle and the pair took the score past the 100 mark.

Newman reached his half century before being dismissed for 52 with the score on 102-6, while Harrison continued to score freely to go on to make 34 as Billingborough made 162 all out.

It was an under par batting performance from Billingborough and put pressure on their bowling attack.

But the bowlers were up to the task and Houlton were soon in trouble at 0-2 as Scott took two scalps in his opening over.

From there Moulton never recovered. Billingborough’s Dave Gollop was on fire from his opening delivery, bowling a fine line and length. The movement he was getting made him almost unplayable at times and he finished with figures of 5-19 off eight overs.

Jex top scored on 36 but he could nothing to prevent Moulton’s collapse to 87 all out, as Billingborough wrapped up an efficient 75 run victory.

l Billingborough 1st XI are in action tonight (Wednesday) against Spalding at Sleaford Cricket Club, starting at 6.20pm.

On Saturday, Billingborough are at home to Belton Park in the South Lincolnshire and Border League.
