Flying firefighter takes second at Isle of Man

FIREFIGHTER Ross Johnson rode to a strong second place in the Isle of Man Manx Telecom Post TT 400cc race.

Riding a 400cc Kawasaki, Ross went well in qualifying. He was lying in fourth place but upped his pace towards the end of the session to grab second around the 4.25-mile public road circuit on the south of the island.

As the eight lap affair got underway Johnson, from Woodhall Spa, completed the first circuit in third place but moved up to second one lap later.

He remained in a comfortable second position until the final lap when he was held up by some backmarkers. This allowed Pete Simpson to catch and pass him with four corners remaining to the chequered flag.

But, when Simpson out-braked himself, Johnson managed to get past on the inside and on the drag to the flag he maintained his position to take the runner up spot behind race winner Roy Richardson.

Johnson saw further race action when he contested the 500cc race on a Yamaha R6 where he qualified in 12th position.

He made a good start and began to reel in the rider ahead but, as the race progressed, the back tyre began to wear and he was forced to settle for 13th place.

Johnson said: "I was happy enough with 13th. Once my tyre began to go off I decided it was safer to roll off and settle for 13th sooner than go for it and maybe crash.

"The 400 race was a really good result for me. I was very pleased with the runner up place in such a strong field of riders."

Johnson's next outing will be at the Barry Sheene Memorial meeting at Scarborough's Oliver's Mount circuit in two weeks time.
