FOOTBALL: Lincoln Saturday League round-up

While the rest of the country was suffering foul weather Lincolnshire was fortunate to get away with the worst of it, allowing three second round ties in the David Cooper Cup, and a bottom of the table league clash in the Lincoln Saturday League to go ahead.

This saw 31 goals scored in the four matches played, although local side Fulbeck United were without a game.

There were goals in abundance as AFC Crown and Arrow took on Horncastle Town Reserves in their round two David Cooper Cup tie.

The city side had beaten Horncastle in the opening game of the season and were hoping to continue their winning run with a third victory in a row.

Horncastle on the other hand were in their worst run of this campaign and were hoping to prevent a third defeat in succession and to progress to the semi-finals.

In a match of eight goals, Crown and Arrows took the tie 5-3 with two goals from Tom Allan and one each from Paul Walker, Danny Bee (his 14th of the season) and Liam Bentley (his ninth), while Jack Baxter netted his first two goals for Horncastle this season along with a third of the campaign from Dave Maplethorpe.

Top scorers on the day were Cherry Willingham who took on Retford Town in their round two tie.

The home side had suffered a first defeat in eight games in their last outing and had already beaten their opponents away in a league match. Retford on the other hand had won just once in their last eight games and were well beaten in this match, losing 7-2.

Brendan Foster-Matthieson bagged his first hat-trick of the season but 14th goal in total, along with other goals from Jon Otter, Bobby Jenkinson, Ash Bradley and an own goal.

Another side to net a bag full of goals were Birchwood United who were also in David Cooper Cup action when hosting neighbours Ruston Sports.

The home side had already knocked Rustons out of the Challenge Cup by a 6-1 scoreline and on this occasion it was 6-2. Netting their goals were Danny Kent 2 (his sixth of the season), Paul Nicholson (12th), Jay Tinkler (9th), Mark Walker and Grant Foster, while Harvey Melady and Pete Reading netted for Rustons.

The fourth match was a bottom of the table clash between winless Railway Inn and Saxilby Athletic who had won just once.

The Railway Inn not only created a bit of history for themselves with a first win since joining this league but also banged in five goals, the most they have scored in one game.

The match ended 5-2 with their goals coming from Tom Holmes (his seventh of the season), Alan Forwood, James Smith, Ady Smith and Chris Wells.

The victory took Railway Inn off the bottom, pushing Saxilby back into this position.
