After four straight defeats, Pointon under 15s bounced back with a superb win over mid-table Ruston.
The Blues put in a spirited first 10 minutes, but Ruston grew in stature as the game progressed and went ahead with a deflected goal after 20 minutes.
Far from losing heart, Pointon battled hard in what was becoming a very physical encounter, enduring a long spell of pressure and keeping the visitors at bay for the remainder of the first half.
Opportunities for Pointon were limited to shots by Mike Fleming and George Beech, neither of which troubled the keeper.
The visitors came out strongly again and almost got a second when a great shot hit the inside of a Pointon post before being collected comfortably by a grateful Jed Humphries an the home goal.
Cameron Atkinson came off the subs bench for Ed Brady, and this signalled an about turn in Pointon’s fortunes.
His run along the line and neat pass to Mike Fleming was met with a delightful flick past the Ruston keeper to put the Blues level.
The home crowd were still buzzing as Fleming raced forward again, dispossessing a defender and beating another before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the top left hand corner of the Ruston net.
Stunned by this double whammy, the visitors’ tactics became more and more cynical, and at one point the game looked likely to boil over. Ruston tried desperately to throw men forward and did hit the bar with a quality free kick near the end, but Blues held on – the full time euphoria making the bruises worthwhile.
