Pointon U15 1 - Harrowby U15 0
Full of confidence after a 7-1 friendly victory over Rippingale in mid-week, promoted Pointon opened the season with a hard fought win over relegated Harrowby.
Although two leagues separated these teams last season, they were evenly matched, and scoring chances were few and far between throughout the match.
The visitors had marginally the better of the first half, with the bulk of the possession and a couple of shots, the first just over the bar after five minutes and a second effort well saved by Jed Humphries in the home goal.
Fielding four debutants in the shape of Alex Belmrose, Cameron Atkinson and twins, Josh and Jacob Benton, Pointon seemed happy to soak up the pressure and frustrate the visitors. This was evident from a spate of niggly fouls on both sides and Harrowby had a strong penalty claim denied by the referee midway through the half. Max Graham was handed a yellow card after a crunching tackle on the edge of the home box.
Blues grew in stature throughout the half and had a couple of chances late on, a Max Graham shot went wide of the post, and Connor Lindley was tackled well in front of goal.
Two minutes into the second half Graham’s pass found last season’s top scorer Mike Fleming who rounded a defender and slotted the ball sweetly into the corner of the Harrowby net to put Pointon ahead. Far from sitting back, Blues continued to push forward, enjoying plenty of possession and flowing football. Harrowby were denied by several good saves from the outstanding Jed Humphries, and had another penalty call waved away by the ref, much to the frustration of the travelling supporters. Blues held their nerve though, and despite a bruising encounter, they left the field with broad smiles all round.
