GREG BATTLES HIS WAY TO BRITISH TITLE

FORMER Sleaford Standard Sportsman of the Year Greg Darmon has been crowned British full contact kickboxing champion.

He won the title belt at the BFKKO/WFKKO World Title Show at Retford Town Hall.

The BFKKO Pro British title bout consisted of five two minute rounds against Tim Nibblet of Mansfield.

Greg, of Sleaford's Impact Martial Arts Club, took the title on a unanimous decision and to complete a perfect event for Greg he also received the fighter of the night award.

In rounds one and two Greg looked in good shape, producing clean punches and kick combinations and using his feet well to thwart the attacks of his opponent.

By round three he upped the tempo and caught Nibblet with some solid punches to the head which had the Mansfield man pressed back onto the ropes. A power hit to the ribs by Darmon stopped the fight for an '8' count.

Greg continued to pile on the pressure in the fourth and there was little resistance or response from Nibblet, who was now unsteady on his feet yet proving very durable.

In the final round, the Sleaford man made sure he kept well out of trouble, throwing good combinations when he needed to, as he made certain of the verdict.

Greg said: "As the bell rang I was relieved as I thought I had won. It was such a great feeling when the referee raised my hand to confirm I had won the British Pro full contact title, which is something I have been working towards for a long time.

"I am grateful to my coach Titch and everyone at Impact for coming and supporting me."

From 2007 Cris Janson Piers is to become Greg's pro full contact manager.
