Jack claims maiden win from first pole position
YOUNG racing driver Jack Harvey scored a memorable maiden win from his first ever pole position in the latest rounds of the Formula BMW Europe series at Zandvoort in the Netherlands at the weekend.
The 16-year-old from Bassingham, a former karting champion, in just his second car race event, drove faultlessly in the Saturday qualifying session, missing out on pole for race one by just six hundredths of a second. However, his second quickest lap of the session was good enough to give him the prime position for race two.
As the weekend's opening race got underway on Sunday morning Jack, on the dirty side of the track, struggled with wheel spin and lost two places at the start to pole-man Robin
Frijns and Felipe Nasr. Despite struggling with under steer, Jack drove a steady defensive race over the course of the remaining laps to take a solid fifth place and rack up valuable rookie championship points.
In race two, Jack again struggled slightly with wheel spin and lost the lead to Daniel Juncadella, with first round winner Nasr slotting into third. A safety car period after three laps bunched up the pack and, at the re-start, a three-way fight for victory developed.
On the tenth lap, this battle allowed Nasr to move into second and chase down race-leader Juncadella and on the penultimate lap he got past. Behind the battling duo, Jack was biding his time and waiting for the chance to pounce.
On the final lap, a superb move by the reigning KF2 kart champion at the end of the pit straight, gave Jack the lead which he held to the flag to notch up his first ever car race win.
He said: "It was a great weekend but I really never thought I'd be taking my first pole position and first win in only my second weekend in car races.
"The Fortec team did a great job and I'm really happy to have given the boys their first win in European FBMW. It's fantastic too for the Racing Steps Foundation which has been so supportive and it's nice to be able to repay the faith shown in me."
Jack is in action again this coming weekend with races at the sold-out British Grand Prix.
