Jill joins exclusive sixth degree 'club'
MARTIAL artist Jill Pearce has been awarded promotion to sixth degree black-belt.
The prestigious award recognises those who have given outstanding service to Tae Kwon-Do with a minimum of 25 years dedication to the sport.
At a special awards ceremony in Birmingham she received her certificate from grandmaster David Oliver, eighth degree black-belt and president of Tae Kwon-Do International.
Together with area chief instructor Malcolm Scholes, seventh degree black-belt, she was jointly commended for her hard work and devotion to the sport.
Malcolm said: "Jill's ethos that a Tae Kwon-Do class should be structured to suit the student not the student to suit the teaching is what has attributed to her success."
David Oliver added: "Jill deserves this promotion and her entry into the exclusive club of lady sixth degrees in Great Britain reflects her character and determination in the past 25 years."
Jill started training in 1985 in Grantham with area chief instructor Malcolm Scholes and her early career was crammed with success. She won multiple championships, European and national titles.
She still trains regularly with Malcolm but travels whenever possible all over the world to meet the original masters from the early Fifties who pioneered Tae Kwon-Do.
Jill runs the Tae Kwon-Do club at Carre's Grammar School in Sleaford. She said: "The modern teaching methods emphasise the need to work with control and respect, which means you can learn self defence without having to get hurt.
"Female athletes are aware of the benefits of Tae Kwon-Do complimenting their other sports disciplines. It is not uncommon to find a class of 30 students completely full of ladies."
He added: "I'm absolutely thrilled to attain a role traditionally seen as an exclusive male domain and hope this will give other women inspiration and show what can be accomplished."
"I don't want to be content to just wear the title of a sixth degree. I'm going to put it to good use and this year I'm determined to promote the sport to the whole community."
Jill teaches Tae Kwon-Do all over the East Midlands and plans to establish new clubs as well as endorsing the advantages of Tae Kwon-Do into schools.
She added: "Tae Kwon-Do has so much more to offer than the obvious fitness aspect. Our present schools have found significant progress in their students' development after including it on their timetable."
