Johnson claims second at Southern 100 meet

ROSS Johnson from Woodhall Spa scored well at the annual Isle of Man Steam Packet Southern 100 races recently.

He scored two top four results on the 400cc Kawasaki ZXR4 and two top 20 results on the Yamaha R6 machine before travelling north to the Jurby National meeting to pick up two top six results from that meeting.

At the Southern 100, the Lincolnshire firefighter qualified his 400cc Kawasaki in fourth place for the two races and scored a fine second place on the first outing.

Ironically the finishing order this time was exactly the same as in his previous race on the Island, the Post TT race, when Roy Richardson was the winner, Johnson second and Peter Simpson third.

He was not so lucky the following day. He held second place for a while but dropped back to fourth and, although he was catching the riders ahead, the red flag stopped the race and a result called, leaving him down in fourth position.

Next up was the 600 race where Johnson qualified in 26th position and completed the race in 17th.

In the Senior race Johnson was up against some stiff opposition, the majority of whom were on more powerful superbikes. He qualified his R6 Yamaha in 24th place and finished in a very respectable 20th position.

Johnson followed that by heading north to Jurby where he contested the 1300cc open class race on his R6 Yamaha. Again he was up against stiff opposition but finished in fourth position to be the first 600cc competitor over the finish line.

He went on to contest the 600cc race where he qualified in ninth place and crossed the finish line in sixth.

But Johnson was disappointed in the 400cc race as he got to the holding area in preparation for the start only to find a competitor in the previous race had a problem and left a huge oil slick on the track causing the meeting to be abandoned.

Johnson said: "That was disappointing as there was less than a second between the top five in qualifying and I was hoping for a good result. But the track was just too dangerous to put another race on so that was that."

Ross will be returning to the Isle of Man in August for the prestigious Manx GP, which begins on August 21.
