Victory on the road for ladies’ rugby side

Old Newtonians 5 Sleaford Ladies 22

Sleaford Ladies’ rugby team picked up their first away victory of the season with a staunch performance at Old Newtonians.

Both teams had early opportunities and O’Rourke came close to an opening with a surging run that took her 25 metres up field before a tap tackle stopped her.

Further surges from Orrow and Wilson looked threatening but again the Sleaford Ladies were thwarted on each occasion.

Just when the first half looked as if it would close scoreless, the forwards forced themselves into a try scoring position, with Orrow claiming the touchdown to put the visitors 5-0 ahead at the break.

In the second half Sleaford had to deal with the sun in their eyes and could have been forgiven for losing the odd high ball but Wilson and Turner caught everything and repeatedly returned the yardage.

O’Rourke extended Sleaford’s lead with a try between the sticks, with Orrow adding the conversion to make it 12–0.

They pulled further ahead through Stacey Wilson, with her maiden try for the team, before Newtonians hit back with their only score of the game.

Orrow touched down for Sleaford’s fourth try to make the final score 22–5.

It was a well deserved victory and one that pushed Sleaford into third place in the league.
