BOWLS: Sleaford indoor club exact revenge over Horncastle at home

This was a return fixture and the home team were looking for revenge for the match played back in February. The end result was a win for Sleaford 91-70.

Rink 1: Keith Richards had Diane Watson and Sylvia Goate in his set and in a match that was evenly balanced throughout their opponents found that little bit extra when needed, with Sleaford losing 17-14 and the winning margin being scored on the last two ends.

Rink 2: Terry Wallis skippered a team consisting of Yvonne Paul and Mike Goate who started strongly, taking an 8-4 lead into the ninth end, but were unable to stop the opposition picking up shots to catch up with the home set, overtake them by building up a steady lead and finishing the match with 12 shots over the last four ends, to be victors by 20-11. The Horncastle set nearly made a hot-shot, scoring with seven of their nine bowls on one end.

Rink 3: Malcolm Brett had Bill Stevenson and team captain Helen Quirke joining him as they flew out of the blocks, taking an early 8-2 lead, fell apart slightly in the middle, but regrouped to win their game 23-13.

Rink 4: Steve Traynor along with Elaine Traynor and Gloria Davies turned in a commanding performance to win 22-3, giving their opposite number a torrid afternoon. Some bowlers at the club believe rink four to be a nightmare, however this set proved it can bowl well.

Rink 5: Terry Curran joined by Ken Searle and Lily Searle took an early 5-2 lead before dropping nine shots over three ends, to go behind 11-6. They picked up five shots on the 11th end to make the game all square until Horncastle scored with four woods on end 15 to lead 17-12. But back came the Sleaford set, winning nine shots on the last three to see them home and dry, 21-17.

Both teams of bowlers enjoyed the sit-down meal after the game and team captain Helen Quirke announced she would be handing over the captaincy next season to Carol and Terry Wallis.

The team showed their appreciation to Helen for all the work she had put into organising the friendly matches this season.
