Horspole sees his high hopes stall after losing ground in title charge

IT was a weekend of highs and lows for a Leasingham sidecar racer.

Gary Horspole, with Robert Biggs in the chair, made a return visit to Brands Hatch in Kent for round five of the Eastern Airways British Sidecar championship, where they scored a strong top 10 finish to the first of two races over the weekend.

This time the racing was held on the full GP circuit and despite suffering a few technical problems, Horspole put in some tidy laps to secure a seventh row grid position in 14th place for the start of the first 15 lap race on Saturday.

As the race got underway, Horspole and Biggs got a good start and straight away moved into 10th place which they held for the opening few rounds. As the race progressed they passed Chaplow/Tritton and Clarke/Graham to establish eighth position at the midway stage of the race. A battle between the three outfits ensued and eventually Horspole was beaten back to 10th place where he remained to the chequered flag.

The second race on Sunday saw Horspole and Biggs placed on row five for the start, but after the sighting lap they returned to pit lane to make some adjustments.

Unfortunately they were unable to make a start from pit lane and retired before the race began.

Horspole and Biggs picked up six championship points for their 10th place on Saturday but the non finish on Sunday caused them to drop a place in the overall rider standings to ninth on 53 points.

The next round is closer to home at the Leicestershire circuit of Donington Park on September 9.

Horspole will be seeking two strong results to boost his points tally and elevate him up the rider standings in the championship.
