COUNCILLORS and North Kesteven District Council employees alike have wished our Olympians all the best for this week’s coming events.

NKDC are extending their good luck wishes to the athletes with connections to the District selected to represent Great Britain in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

As well as Team GB swimmer Sophie Allen, from Fulbeck, North Kesteven also has four other athletes hoping to bring home the gold at the Games over the coming weeks.

Kate Haywood, whose parents live at Brant Broughton, is a British record-holder for the 100-metre breaststroke, and is hoping to make waves during her events early next week.

Emily Taylor, from Heighington, was a pupil at Sir Robert Pattinson Academy and is in Team GB’s rowing squad for the rowing pairs.

Heckington seated discus thrower Kieran Tscherniawsky will be competing in the Paralympics GB. Kieran achieved a personal best of almost 30 metres in the Senior World Championships, and a silver in the World Cup gave him a world-second ranking.

In addition, Andy Skinner, from Skellingthorpe, is a seated volleyball player and on the reserve list for the Paralympics GB squad for the sport. Andy has represented Britain 40 times in a variety of disabled sports and coaches sitting volleyball nationally.

NKDC Council Leader Coun Mrs Marion Brighton OBE said: “We are very proud of North Kesteven’s world-class Olympic and Paralympic athletes. On behalf of NKDC, I congratulate them all on their wonderful achievements. Our athletes’ presence at London 2012 shows how vital it is to support sport at grass-roots level.

“There’s absolutely no doubt that Kieran, Andy, Emily, Kate and Sophie’s remarkable achievements are inspiring people of all ages in the District and will continue to do so once London 2012 is over. We wish them every success in the coming weeks.”
