Sophie promises to ‘do us proud’

OLYMPIC dreams came to an end for a Fulbeck swimmer after a hard-fought qualification round.

Swimmer Sophie Allen came fifth in her heat in the 200m Individual Medley in Monday’s Olympic qualifying rounds, in a time of 2.14.72, and was ranked 21st overall which saw her miss out on a place in the semi-finals by just .46 of a second.

Her GB teammate Hannah Miley qualified for the semi-final in 10th position in a time of 2.12.27.

Speaking after the race on her Twitter account, Sophie said: “Gutted to have not made the semi final tonight!but it was my first senior meet so hopefully the future will bring better things for me.”

She also thanked everyone who has supported her all the way: “Support has been amazing! It’s great to still have people behind me even after a disappointing performance! Will do u all proud next time!”

Fellow swimmer Kate Haywood, who’s parents live in Brant Broughton, also had a disappointing round in the 100m Breaststroke, and after failing to qualify for the semi finals on Monday she announced her retirement from swimming.

She said on her Twitter page: “Yesterday didn’t go to plan, but now its time to move on and support the rest of the swimmers and #TeamGB.”
